The keynote speaker was Professor Joseph Cheer from Western Sydney University, co-editor of Tourism Geographies. With a wealth of experience in tourism research and journal editing, Professor Cheer provided insights on publishing in high-rejection-rate environments. He discussed strategic planning, covering topic selection, publication strategies and academic branding.

Professor Cheer highlighted the critical role of publishing high-quality papers for academic career growth. He noted that researchers, especially early-career scholars, face increasing demands to balance teaching, administration, student supervision and research output. With journal rejection rates often reaching 80 to 90 percent, he stressed the need for clear publication goals and strategies.

Drawing from his global collaboration experience, Professor Cheer addressed the challenges faced by non-native English researchers. He suggested that the main difficulty lies in mismatched academic thinking and writing styles rather than language barriers. He encouraged international collaboration to bridge these gaps and enhance the international reach of their work.

In the discussion, Professor Cheer emphasized the importance of research design, stating it as the foundation for successful publication. He provided guidance on journal selection and handling reviewer feedback, highlighting the value of teamwork in refining research. He encouraged exploring emerging interdisciplinary fields for groundbreaking results while avoiding over-explored topics.

Professor Cheer will speak at the Tourism Science Annual Conference in Haikou this April, offering further insights on academic frontiers. Researchers are encouraged to continue their academic pursuits, ensuring their work gains recognition.
