In this talk Ryan is seeking to speculate on the implications of smart tourism for students’ understanding of Dick Butler's tourist area life cycle.

Guest speaker introduction

Chris Ryan is a professor of tourism at the University of Waikato, New Zealand, where he is the director of the China-New Zealand Tourism Research Unit. Ryan has served as the chief editor of Tourism Management (IF>10) for 25 years, Tourism Management Perspectives, which he initiated, for five years and Tourism Critiques: Practice and Theory for three years. As a researcher, he has published more than 200 refereed journal articles, and edited and co-authored 14 books. His most recent book was published in 2020, entitled An Advanced Introduction to Tourism Destination Management. Ryan was appointed by New Zealand as an advisor to the APEC Tourism Ministers. He has reported to the UNWTO on two of China's sustainable monitoring centers and worked on a report on Huangshan for the Huangshan Scenic Committee. He has also undertaken advisory work for the New Zealand governmental bodies, the Australian Bureau of Tourism Research and various New Zealand organizations and worked as an advisory board member for the Hamilton-Waikato Regional Tourism Organization.
